Boggle

Made by Hasbro, Boggle’s a fantastic word game for all the family, and it’s our family’s top pick.  There are sixteen diced letters held in a box, and you just need to give the box a shake to arrange the letters for the next game. You make as many words, as possible, from the letters. There’s a timer, so it’s a race against the clock as to who can get the most points before the time is up.

Why we like Boggle -

• It’s a great game to play when you only have half an hour to spare. Games only last a couple of minutes, so you can play after mealtimes or while you’re drinking your coffee.

• It’s easy to adjust the rules so the under 8’s can play. Start the younger kids off by letting them build two letter words and using letters anywhere in the frame. When they’ve got the hang of it, move them up to building two letter words with letters that aren’t connected, and so on…

• Great educational value without being tedious. The kids are usually the ones begging to play.

• Any number of people can play – you can even play on your own to help improve your vocabulary and spelling.

• It’s a small box to store.

• No batteries

• It’s simple. Once you’ve learned how to score there’s nothing else to it

• We love the fights over made up words. Someone always comes up with a word ‘they know is a word’ even though the dictionaries say otherwise.

Variations – Boggle junior, Boggle credit card game, Boggle deluxe.
When to play? – When time’s short, when you want to challenge grandma to a duel!
Good For - couples, groups, families, mum & dad, grandma & granddad

Top Tips for word games –
• Have a dictionary handy or, if you have easy access to the internet, use an online dictionary –to check dodgy words and spellings.

• Eco friendly –Use flyers and scrap paper to minimise waste.

• Store a collection of pens in the Boggle box –it’s annoying to have to go hunting for pens when you want to start the game.

• If you’ve got a really old version of Boggle, buy a cheap electric timer that beeps when time’s up, so you won’t have to keep an eye on the egg timer. You can tell how long we’ve been playing Boggle!
